A reforestation project in Timor-Leste with the nongovernment organization (NGO) Santalum resulted in the planting of more than 10,000 seedlings in Tasi Tolu to prevent soil erosion. Transforming a rocky hilltop to a location lush in trees and shrubs, the project success prompted a second reforestation project of 3,000 trees along a flat coastal area at the base of the original site. In addition to the ecological benefits, the effort has provided local training and employment opportunities, including hands-on experience for local students and volunteers.
