Lucy Benjamin
Tomball Intermediate
Tomball Independent School District
Lucy is a sixth-grade math teacher at Tomball Intermediate. She is a graduate of the University of Houston. This is her 17th year teaching math. Nine of those years, she served as an instructional coach for 6th and 7th grade math at Klein ISD. She worked directly with other math teachers to help support and improve both students’ and teachers’ learning.
Lucy works hard at truly making her math classes engaging and fun, while keeping learning at a high rigor. She presents her students with challenges and gives them the opportunity for a lot of peer interaction because she understands the importance of students working with one another to solve and dissect mathematical problems. She strongly believes in a growth mindset and works with her students to help them find their simple mistakes and encourage the love for learning. Through mistakes and corrections, her students learn better and increase the chance of retaining information. This approach has resulted in her students having great success on the 6th grade math STAAR test. In 2023, 100% of her students passed with approximately 94% of them mastering the test.
Lucy’s excellence in teaching has been recognized throughout her career. She has been recognized as a Designated Teacher at “Master Level” by the Texas Education Agency. She has been recognized by superintendents in both Klein ISD and Tomball ISD. She received the Tomball ISD Superintendent’s Shining Star Award, and a certificate of recognition from the Board of Trustees and Superintendent in Tomball ISD. She has been named teacher of the year twice, for Klein ISD, and a Most Valuable Teacher and Campus A+ Teacher of the Year by Tomball ISD. In addition, she has also served as part of the curriculum writing team for Klein ISD and Tomball ISD.
