HOUSTON – Polar Tankers, Inc. (“Polar Tankers”) a wholly-owned subsidiary of ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP), was awarded the U.S. Coast Guard’s Rear Admiral William M. Benkert Silver Award for Environmental Excellence, which was presented at the 2024 NAMEPA Safety at Sea Seminar on May 22, 2024, in Washington D.C., during National Maritime Week. The company has previously received the highest-level Osprey award in 2018 and 2014.

Polar Tankers owns and operates five double-hulled Endeavour-class tankers, each with million-barrel capacity and state-of-the-art redundant systems for environmental safety. These ships serve the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline System trade, loading crude oil in the Port of Valdez, Alaska, and delivering to refineries primarily on the U.S. West Coast.

“Polar Tankers is honored to accept this prestigious award,” said Chris Bulera, General Manager, Global Marine and President of Polar Tankers. “We appreciate the recognition of our fleet’s dedication to protecting the marine environment, which is a core value of our operating philosophy. This award provides a platform for the maritime industry to showcase its continued dedication to environmental stewardship and responsible operations. We are proud of our employees and appreciate this recognition from the U.S. Coast Guard, which provides exemplary service to Polar Tankers, ConocoPhillips, the maritime industry and the entire nation.”

The Benkert Award program was created to honor outstanding achievements in marine environmental protection that go beyond compliance with industry and regulatory standards and recognizes operators that have demonstrated sustained excellence and outstanding achievement in protecting the marine environment. It also encourages innovation in operations, maintenance, cargo handling, refueling, and training while providing a means to share best practices with others in the maritime industry. A committee reviews and scores award applications submitted biennially by maritime operators. The Silver award category is among the highest environmental distinctions awarded by the U.S. Coast Guard.
