HOUSTON, July 10, 2012 – The board of directors of ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) has elected Ms. Jody Freeman as a new outside director. The election of Professor Freeman increases the total number of ConocoPhillips directors to 10, of which nine are outside directors. She will serve on the Public Policy Committee of the ConocoPhillips board.

Professor Freeman, 48, is the Archibald Cox Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. She is a leading scholar of administrative and environmental law and is the founding director of the Harvard Law School Environmental Law and Policy Program. She joined the Harvard Law faculty in 2005 and was previously professor of Law at UCLA School of Law from 1995 to 2005.

In making the announcement, ConocoPhillips Chairman and CEO Ryan Lance said, “Our company is strongly committed to the highest standards for health, safety and environmental stewardship. Jody’s presence on the board will add a unique and valuable perspective, and help to advance our commitment to operational excellence around the world.”

Professor Freeman served as Counselor for Energy and Climate Change in the White House in 2009-2010, contributing to a variety of policy initiatives, including greenhouse gas regulation, renewable energy, energy efficiency, transmission policy, oil and gas drilling, and comprehensive energy and climate legislation. In 2010, after leaving the administration, she served as an independent consultant to the National Commission on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling. A prominent thinker on collaborative and contractual approaches to governance, Professor Freeman was appointed in 2010 to the Administrative Conference of the United States, the government think tank for improving the administrative and regulatory process. She was elected to the American College of Environmental Lawyers in 2011.

Professor Freeman holds a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University, a law degree from the University of Toronto, and a master’s degree and doctorate from Harvard Law School.
